Spring has sprung and it's time to head outdoors! As you prepare for the camping season it's important to be ready and follow important safety tips. We've put together a list that's sure to help you get started on the right track.
Whether you're bringing a tent or traveling in an RV it's important to check out all your equipment before you go. No one has time to deal with a tear in the tent as you prepare to pitch it at the campsite, make sure to pull everything out and give it a good inspection before you hit the road. And as for your RV goes, it's always a great idea to take it in for a tune up so your tires, air conditioner, water tank and so much more can be looked over.
With warmer temps rising – the bugs (and other creatures!) are bound to show up. Stock up on insect repellent to keep mosquitoes and pesky ticks at bay. If you're staying in an area where bears are known to frequent, it's always a good idea to keep bear spray on you and know how to properly use it in the event of an emergency. Finally, protect yourself from the sun's rays with sunscreen and make sure you stay hydrated with plenty of water.
For those traveling in an RV or staying at a cozy cottage rental, it's always a good idea to make sure your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are working. If you're not sure your rental has one, bring one from home! You can never be too prepared.
No matter where you choose to set up camp, it's always great to have a better idea on what's going on around you. Is there a lot of wildlife in the area? Most campsites will tell you to safely secure your food to keep away animals such as raccoons and bears.
Weather can also be unpredictable, so it's a good idea to keep an eye on your weather app as you lead up to your trip so you can be prepared for any elements. Finally, let someone know about your travel plans and your whereabouts prior to leaving so in the event of an emergency you can be accounted for.
Always travel with a first-aid kit. There are so many options available from small on-the-go packs to ultimate first-aid kits that have plenty of helpful items to assist with minor injuries and emergencies. Simple items such as band-aids are helpful for cuts, scrapes, and blisters that may form after a long day of hiking, while antibiotic creams are great to help prevent infections until you can see a doctor.
We hope these simple tips will help kick your camping season off to a great start. We have incredible resorts located across the U.S. and Canada – start planning your perfect getaway today.
