The Ultimate Guide to Blueberry Picking: Tips and Seasonal Insights

Nature's delicious, distinctly-colored fruit, blueberries, are a healthy, seasonal treat. While they grow wild across North America, these nutrient-packed berries are also cultivated on farms. With tall bushes full of fruit, blueberry picking is a delightful outdoor activity for families and friends alike.

Blueberry Picking Season

When it comes to timing your blueberry adventures, knowing the blueberry picking season in your area is crucial. Depending on your location, blueberries may be a springtime snack or a summer sweet. Here's a breakdown by region:

  • Southern U.S.: In states like Florida, blueberry season kicks off in April, with prime picking lasting until late May.

  • Mid-South: North of Atlanta and into southern Ohio, blueberry farms generally open in mid-June, with the best picking occurring in early to mid-July.

  • Northern Locations: In cooler climates like Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ontario, blueberries typically start ripening in mid- to late July. The season can extend into August and even September.

Keep in mind that weather conditions can significantly affect the timing of the season. A late winter storm might delay ripening by two weeks or more. To stay updated, call a local blueberry farm to check on their crop progress.

How to Pick Blueberries

Now that you know when to pick, let's discuss how to pick blueberries effectively. Here are some essential tips:

  1. Gather Your Supplies: You'll need a container for your berries. Large ice cream pails, one-gallon milk jugs with the top cut off, or reusable grocery bags work well.

  2. Find the Best Bush: Head to the back of the farm, where fewer people have picked. Look for bushes that are tall and loaded with berries.

  3. Choose the Right Berries: Good blueberries should be:

    • Very blue
    • Smooth-skinned without cracks
    • Large, round, and slightly soft

Remember, blueberries do not ripen after being picked, so leave any berries that are still red, green, or white.

  4. Washing and Storing: Be sure to wash your blueberries before consuming them. They have a relatively short shelf life but freeze very well. To freeze, thoroughly dry your blueberries, place them on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper, and store them in freezer-safe containers or bags once frozen.
