Dive into Adventure: Florida's Scallop Season is Here!

It's that exciting time of year again when Florida locals and visitors flock to the Gulf Coast for the seasonal underwater Easter egg hunt, known as scallop season! From July 1 to August 6, the harvest opens from the Fenholloway to the Suwannee rivers, offering seafood lovers a unique and delicious experience.

Florida's Underwater Easter Egg Hunt

During scallop season, adventurous seafood enthusiasts head to popular spots like Crystal River, Steinhatchee, and Port St. Joe to harvest their share of bay scallops. These delectable mollusks are not only a culinary delight but also provide a thrilling day of exploration. Known for their striking electric blue eyes, bay scallops can be found in seagrass beds at depths of 3 to 8 feet along Florida's picturesque west and northwest coasts.

Essentials for Bay Scallop Harvesting

This activity is perfect for all ages, making it a great family outing! Here's what you'll need to enjoy your day of scalloping:

  • Mesh bag: For collecting your catch
  • Mask and snorkel: Essential for underwater exploration
  • Daily limit: Each person can collect up to two gallons of whole bay scallops in their shell, or one cup of shucked scallop meat.
  • Fishing license: A Florida saltwater fishing license is required for each participant, unless you're on a chartered trip with a licensed captain.

So grab your snorkel gear, pack your mesh bag, and make a reservation at one of our resorts while there's still availability!

The best part? Sun Outdoors offers several resorts conveniently located near Crystal River and along the Gulf Coast, making it easy to join in this famous treasure hunt!
