Gourmet Burger Recipes to Try at Home

Anyone who's been camping knows the essential experience of grilling burgers. The smoky smells and meals eaten outdoors come together to form a timeless tradition. Sometimes though, you want to amp up the usual burger. In that case, these four gourmet burger recipes will do the trick!

Grill Out with Gourmet Burger Recipes

1. Black and Blue Burger

Pairing smoky spices and the funky flavor of blue cheese, a black and blue burger is a timeless combo. If you've never used blackened seasoning, it's the same thing as Cajun seasoning. You can buy premade mixes or make your own with basic pantry spices.

Black and blue burgers are very versatile. We recommend classic burger toppings like lettuce, tomato, and onion, but feel free to get creative!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chuck
  • Salt and blackening spice, to taste
  • 4 ounces crumbled blue cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Toppings like lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard, etc.
Method
  1. Preheat grill, adding smoky woodchips if desired.
  2. Divide ground chuck into four equal parts and shape into patties. Season with salt and blackening spice.
  3. Grill to an internal temperature of 160 degrees F.
  4. Assemble each burger by spreading the bottom bun with mustard, then layering lettuce, tomato, burger, onion, and blue cheese.
Juicy Lucy Burger

2. Juicy Lucy Burger

Ever heard of a Juicy Lucy? Uniquely Midwestern among gourmet burger recipes, a Juicy Lucy puts the cheese inside the patty. And there's no fancy cheese here, either. Classic sliced American cheese is the only way to go.

Be sure to season the burgers well with salt and pepper. A Juicy Lucy is topped with only pickles and caramelized onions, so the seasoning is important.

Ingredients

  • Salt and pepper
  • 5 pounds ground beef, 80/20 blend works best
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • Caramelized onions, for topping
  • Sliced pickles, for topping
  • 4 hamburger buns
Method
  1. Divide the beef into four equal portions, then halve each of those portions. Roll each portion into a ball then flatten into a patty shape, about ¼ inch thick and four inches wide. Season both sides of each patty with salt and pepper.
  2. Add one slice American cheese to the center of one patty, folding the corners inward. Lift another patty with a spatula and place it on top of the cheese. Gently pinch the edges of the patties together to seal them. Round the edges as you seal. Repeat with the remaining patties to form a total of four burgers.
  3. Add a tablespoon of vegetable oil to a skillet and heat over medium-high heat for two minutes. Add the burgers and cook until seared, about 3-5 minutes per side. Don't flip the burgers too early or they may split open.
  4. Assemble burgers by layering pickles, patties, then caramelized onions on buns.
Garlic Truffle Gourmet Burger Recipe

3. Garlic Truffle Burger

At the top of gourmet burger recipes is the garlic truffle burger. This full-flavored combination has funky mushrooms, Swiss cheese, and savory beef. Serve it with fries, potato chips, or salad for a delicious meal!

Recipe borrowed from Savory Experiments.

Ingredients

  • 4 beef patties, homemade or frozen
  • 2 cups cremini or shiitake mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 cup truffle aioli or truffle mayo
Method
  1. In a large frying pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook for about eight minutes, until they are soft but still have some texture. Set aside.
  2. Heat grill to medium-high heat. Cook burgers until they reach the desired level of doneness. Top each patty with two slices of Swiss cheese. Close lid for one minute to begin melting.
  3. Remove and let burgers rest for a couple minutes. In the meantime, spread the bottom bun for each burger with truffle aioli.
  4. Place a patty on the bun and top with cooked mushrooms. Enjoy!
Black Bean Burgers

4. Black Bean Burger

Sure, these gourmet burger recipes are great. But how about a meatless option? Black bean burgers are a healthy and tasty alternative to a rich beef burger. They're also highly customizable, so season and top as you see fit.

Recipe borrowed from Tastes Better From Scratch.

Ingredients

  • 15 ounce can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • ½ green bell pepper
  • ½ small onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 2/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Hamburger buns and desired toppings
Method
  1. Mash black beans well in a bowl with a fork or potato masher.
  2. Place bell pepper, onion, and garlic in a food processor and process until finely minced. Transfer the mixture to a fine mesh strainer and press lightly to remove excess water.
  3. Add the vegetable mixture to the black beans. Sprinkle in the chili powder, cumin, and salt and pepper. Stir to combine.
  4. Add beaten egg and mix. Stir in bread crumbs and form the mixture into four or five patties.
  5. Grill burgers on a well-oiled grill for about five minutes per side.
  6. Top and serve as desired.

On your next camping trip, take a night and impress the family with a special dinner. These gourmet burger recipes pack plenty of flavor in recipes that are simple enough for cooking while camping. And don't forget to share this post with other gourmands!
