At Sun Outdoors, we recognize Juneteenth as a significant work holiday and are proud to support Outdoor Afro's Juneteenth events. On June 19, we invite guests to join us in honoring this important day with education, celebration, and reflection.
Juneteenth commemorates the 2 ½ years during which over 200,000 enslaved Black Americans in Texas were unjustly kept from their freedom, even after the Emancipation Proclamation became law. Although the Proclamation took effect on January 1, 1863, the announcement of freedom in Texas was not made until June 19, 1865, giving rise to the name "Juneteenth."
This day is a celebration of freedom and serves as a moment for reflection on ongoing issues of racial injustice. Juneteenth is now recognized as a holiday in more than 45 states, with many companies, including Sun, honoring it as a work holiday.
To commemorate Juneteenth, Sun is excited to support Outdoor Afro's holiday events. We invite everyone to spend 2 ½ hours in nature on June 19—whether at the beach, in the mountains, or any outdoor space. This time is an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of freedom in America.
Outdoor Afro encourages participants to write down their thoughts and reflections on freedom. You can submit your written reflections on Outdoor Afro's website, and selected submissions will be published and shared.
Join us in celebrating Juneteenth with Outdoor Afro by spending time outdoors. Share this post and invite your friends, family, and fellow campers to join in the celebration of freedom and reflection.
