8 Labor Day Activities for the Outdoors

8 Excellent Things to Do on Labor Day

As the unofficial end-of-summer holiday, Labor Day is the last chance to make summer break count. Unlike other holidays with strict traditions, Labor Day offers flexibility in how you celebrate. To inspire your plans, here are eight excellent things to do on Labor Day weekend that the whole family will enjoy. If you're staying at one of our outdoor destinations, you'll find nearby activities to enhance your holiday fun!

1. Go Paddleboarding

Try paddleboarding for a unique way to experience the water. Early September is typically when lakes and rivers are warmest, making it the perfect time to paddleboard. If you're unsure about balancing, consider kayaking or canoeing for a more stable experience.

2. Take a Hike

Hiking is one of our favorite activities for Labor Day. The September weather often brings a refreshing coolness compared to the peak summer heat. For hiking recommendations, check out our posts on:

3. Try a Cider Tasting

Apple season has arrived! During Labor Day weekend, visit a local apple farm or cidery for a cider tasting. Explore different apple varieties and blends, especially in Northern states and Ontario.

4. Go Camping

Camping is undoubtedly one of the best things to do on Labor Day. Whether you prefer rustic tent camping, RVing, or cozy vacation rentals, there's no better way to enjoy a getaway. Check out our outdoor destinations across the U.S. and southern Ontario, Canada, for your Labor Day camping trip.

5. Have a Bonfire

A bonfire is an ideal Labor Day activity. Gather around the flames with friends and family to swap stories, share laughs, and enjoy s'mores. It's the perfect way to wrap up summer!

6. Make a S'mores Bar

Set up a s'mores bar alongside your bonfire for extra fun. Offer a variety of toppings and let everyone create their unique s'more combinations! For inspiration, check out our fun s'more recipes.

7. Go Swimming

Before the water cools down, make sure to go for a swim. Whether you're near the freshwater Great Lakes, the mighty Atlantic Ocean, or the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, swimming is an excellent way to enjoy Labor Day.
