Spooktacular Pumpkin Carving Tips for Halloween

Spooky season has arrived, and it's time to prepare your pumpkins! Carving jack-o-lanterns may seem daunting, but with the right tips, you can create fantastic Halloween decorations for your campsite or home. Check out these six essential pumpkin carving tips to get started!

6 Pumpkin Carving Tips

1. Pick the Right Pumpkin

The first step in your pumpkin carving adventure is selecting the perfect pumpkin. For intricate designs, taller pumpkins work best, while wider pumpkins are ideal for painting. Choose one that is firm, light in color, and has a sturdy stem to ensure the best carving experience.

2. Open the Bottom

Many people traditionally cut the top off their pumpkins, but experts recommend opening the bottom instead. This method prevents the sides from caving in after a few days. Plus, you won't have to worry about angling the cut so that the lid fits perfectly!

3. Remove All the Pulp

To create a stunning jack-o-lantern, it's crucial to remove all the pulp and thin the walls. Scoop out the stringy insides and set them aside. Then, use a metal spoon to scrape the interior walls until they're about an inch thick. This allows the light to shine through beautifully and prevents residual pulp from rotting.

Don't throw away the pulp! Separate the seeds by stirring them in cold water until they float apart, then check out our pumpkin seed recipes for delicious ways to use the extras.

4. Sketch and Trace Your Design

Even the best carvers benefit from a good plan. Before carving, sketch your design on paper to get the proportions right. To transfer the design onto the pumpkin, use sewing tracing paper, a permanent marker, or a fork to poke holes along your sketch lines. For inspiration, explore this pumpkin carving template.

5. Don't Remove Pieces as You Carve

As you carve your design, resist the urge to pop out each piece immediately. Leaving the pieces in place keeps the pumpkin stable and makes cutting easier. Once you've finished carving, gently push each piece out from the inside.

6. Make Your Pumpkin Last Longer

After all your hard work, you'll want your pumpkin to last! To keep it fresh, lightly spray the inside with water, then seal in the moisture by applying petroleum jelly to all cut edges. With these tricks, your pumpkin can last for at least two weeks!
