6 Best Places to See Florida Manatees

Florida is renowned for its diverse wildlife, and among its most gentle inhabitants are the West Indian manatees. These elusive and endangered creatures are best spotted from November through March when they flock to warm waters near inland springs and outlets. In this post, we'll highlight six incredible places where you can see Florida manatees in their natural habitat.

Note: Manatees are protected by law, and it is illegal to touch or disturb them. Please observe these gentle giants respectfully.

1. Three Sisters Spring, Crystal River, FL

Often cited as the best place to see Florida manatees, Three Sisters Spring in Crystal River is a must-visit destination. During peak season, you can often see dozens, if not hundreds, of manatees gathered by the spring. Visitors can view these magnificent animals from a boardwalk or rent a kayak to explore the waters of Hunter Springs Park or King's Bay Park.

2. Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, Homosassa, FL

Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is more than just a place to see Florida manatees; it's a haven for a variety of wildlife. In addition to manatees, you'll find alligators, bears, flamingos, and panthers in environments that resemble their native habitats, providing a unique safari experience.

3. Lee County Manatee Park, Fort Myers, FL

Nestled near a power plant, Lee County Manatee Park in Fort Myers attracts many manatees to its warm outflow waters. Visitors can enjoy walking trails along the water or rent kayaks from an on-site rental service. The park also features a playground, butterfly garden, and picnic area, making it a great spot for families.

4. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville, FL

On Florida's Atlantic Coast, the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge frequently draws manatees to its waters. This expansive preserve offers hiking, fishing, and birdwatching, along with a dedicated manatee observation area located on the east side of the Haulover Canal bridge.

5. Manatee Springs State Park, Chiefland, FL

About 50 miles west of Gainesville lies Manatee Springs State Park. Visitors can stroll along an 800-foot boardwalk that connects a vibrant blue spring with a lush cypress forest. This park offers not only manatee viewing but also 8.5 miles of nature trails and a connection to the 32-mile Nature Coast State Trail—perfect for cyclists!
