5 Essential Snowbird Tips for a Smooth Journey Home

As the flowers bloom and days grow longer, it's that time of year when snowbirds begin their migration back north. To ensure a smooth trip, we've compiled five essential snowbird tips for heading home. Safe travels!

Snowbird Pre Departure Checklist

1. Create a Pre-Departure Checklist

Before you leave, create a pre-departure checklist. This can include packing essentials and other necessary tasks. A checklist helps prevent forgetting important items and keeps you organized, allowing you to focus on enjoying your journey.

2. Plan Your Route

Sometimes the journey is just as important as the destination. Snowbirds heading back home have various route options to consider. The slower, scenic routes can be more enjoyable and provide unique stops along the way. Research local events—parades, festivals, or sports games—that might impact your travel time.

3. Conduct an RV Maintenance Check

No snowbird tips are complete without an RV maintenance checklist. Before your journey, check essential RV functions, including oil levels, fluid checks, brake tests, and tire pressure. For added peace of mind, consider having a mechanic inspect your RV for any hidden issues.

4. Prepare for Freezing Temperatures

While you may be enjoying warm weather, the drive home could bring unexpected cold. Be mindful of elevation changes and potential freezing temperatures, especially if traveling through mountainous areas. Winterize your RV by blowing out the water system or adding antifreeze to avoid damage.

Freezing temperatures can seriously damage an RV that hasn't been winterized. If you might encounter cold weather, blow the water out of your RV's water system or use antifreeze. Remember, you can always keep drinking water in the heated living area or your personal car.

5. Switch Your Services Back Home

One of the most crucial snowbird tips is to transfer your services back home. When you spend winter in a different location, various services may need to be reversed in spring. Consider updating the following:

  • Prescription medications
  • Mail services
  • Utilities
  • TV and internet services

By taking these steps, you'll ensure a smoother transition back to your home base.

We hope these snowbird tips help you enjoy your journey north. If you know other snowbirds making the trek home, share this post to help them prepare!
