Five Exciting Attractions in Jacksonville

5 minutes read Feb 26,2020
Jacksonville skyline

The hub of Northeast Florida, Jacksonville is known as the River City by the Sea. Though settled inland, Jacksonville's suburbs extend out to great Atlantic Ocean beaches. While the city may not be flashy, there are plenty of attractions in Jacksonville just waiting to be uncovered.

We've made a list of five exciting things to do in Jacksonville, Florida. Check them out, plan your trip, and have fun in Florida!

Big Talbot Island State Park

5 Great Things to Do in Jacksonville, Florida

1. Little and Big Talbot Island State Parks

Jacksonville may be inland but it's plenty close to seaside attractions. One of these is Little Talbot Island State Park, an undeveloped barrier island. Here, you can discover five miles of white sand beaches and three miles of bike trails. Plus, the waters are ideal for kayaking.

Right next door is Big Talbot Island State Park. This peaceful preserve is perfect for photography and birding. A paved trail runs through the island, but there are also unpaved exploration spots. If you're willing to hit the water, you can take a small boat into the salt marsh and find excellent fishing spots.

Riverside Arts Market

2. Riverside Arts Market

Every Saturday, Jacksonville's Brooklyn neighborhood comes alive with the Riverside Arts Market. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., artisans, bakers, and farmers come and display their wares. This is a perfect place to taste Jacksonville's culture. And it's a great place to find a souvenir!

The Cummer Museum of Arts

3. The Cummer Museum of Art

Located right next to the Riverside Arts Market is The Cummer Museum of Art. This cultural institution houses more than 5,000 items in its permanent collection. What's more, rotating exhibits ensure there's always something new to see

Don't underestimate Jacksonville's outdoor amenities either. The Cummer Museum's gardens contain more than two acres of gorgeous greenery. Stretching along the river, the gardens feature fountains, sculptures, arbors, and more. There's no doubt this is one of the best attractions in Jacksonville.

Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park

4. Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park

Jaxsons certainly love their natural attractions. Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park combines the best of the coast and Jacksonville's inland location. A freshwater lake is perfect for fishing and kayaking, while the Atlantic Ocean beach offers some of the best surfing in Florida. Other things to do include visiting the kids splash park, hiking, biking, and having a picnic.

Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary

5. Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary

We couldn't end this post without talking about Jacksonville's most heartwarming attraction. Catty Shack Ranch is a non-profit wildlife sanctuary for big cats. Dedicated, trained staff members happily guide guests on tours to see lions, pumas, white tigers, and more. It's an incredible experience you won't forget.

Bonus tip: time your tour for feeding hours, which are typically in the early evening.
