Discover Pétanque: The Growing Outdoor Game at Sun Outdoors RV Resorts

Though classic yard games like horseshoes and shuffleboard are well-known, there's an exciting outdoor sport you may not have heard of: Pétanque. This game of French origins has been steadily gaining popularity and is now a beloved amenity at many Sun RV Resorts.

What is Pétanque?

Pétanque, dating back to the early 1900s, spread globally in the mid-1920s. Often compared to the Italian game of bocce ball, pétanque features some distinct differences. While bocce is more of a bowling-style game, pétanque is played as a tossing game, akin to horseshoes. Here's how it works:

  • Boules: Players use hollow steel balls called boules.
  • Cochonnet (Jack): A small wooden ball serves as the target.

The objective is simple: toss or roll your boules as close as possible to the jack while standing in a circle with both feet on the ground.

How to Play Pétanque

Pétanque is typically played in teams and follows a round format. Here's a quick overview of the rules:

  1. Each team takes turns throwing their boules.
  2. After all boules are thrown, the winning team is determined by who has the ball closest to the jack.
  3. The winning team scores one point for each boule that is closer to the jack than the opposing team's closest boule.
  4. To win the game, a team must accumulate 13 points.

Unique Features of Pétanque

One of the standout features of pétanque is the mobile jack. Unlike horseshoes, where the pit is stationary, the jack can be hit and moved, adding an element of strategy and excitement to the game. This dynamic leads to thrilling matches where scores can change dramatically with a single toss.

Why You Should Try Pétanque

With its blend of strategy and social interaction, pétanque is a game that appeals to all ages and skill levels. Whether you're looking for a fun way to pass the time at the campground or want to engage in friendly competition, pétanque is an experience you won't want to miss out on!
