In 1959, a western town sprung up in the fields between Ocean City and Assateague Island. Rodeo performers from across the nation came to perform their western acts during the summer season. Like their cowboy ancestors, performers set up camp behind the tiny town in the woods by the water. As the years went on, crowds of people coming to see the shows decided they would like to stay for a while too.
In 1963, Frontier Town Campground was born. In 1977, Frontier Town Water Park wasn’t far behind, opening its doors in 1977. The main attraction: a concrete, three flume water slide called Red Bird’s Mountain that sent guests splashing into the catch pool below. The concrete slides were replaced in 2018 with the famous “Maryland Slide Tower” that even required a special building height waiver! The water park boasts five tall slides, lazy river, and a brand-new large activity pool lovingly referred to as “The Wagon Pool.”
Frontier Town has expanded to include almost 700 campsites, a full arcade, an 18-hole mini golf course, an ice cream shop, multiple stores, restaurants, and bars, and a ropes course in addition to the Western Park and Water Park.
