Sun Outdoors Ocean City is located just 10 minutes from Assateague State Park and the National Shoreline area. In fact, it’s so close that you can see an Assateague land formation from the beach area at our resort. You can access Assateague’s north entrance at the end of Route 611 and drive (or hike!) around the island. Check our resort shuttle service calendar for convenient shuttle access to the Island.
Assateague is well known for its wild horses, which were once descendants of domestic horses, and have reverted to a wild state. These horses have formed an unique wild horse fellowship – having learned to survive in a hard environment that includes scorching heat, abundant mosquitoes, stormy weather, and poor food quality on this windswept barrier island. These horses graze throughout the island, which makes for a fascinating encounter that you can experience from a safe distance. The horses are split into two main herds, one on the Maryland side and one of the Virginia side of Assateague.
